Dr. Ashok Panigrahi, an Associate Professor and noted finance academic, has published a comprehensive analysis of stock market volatility in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic alongside his co-authors. Titled Volatility Persistence and Spillover Effects of Indian Market in the Global Economy: A Pre- and Post-Pandemic Analysis Using VAR-BEKK-GARCH Model, the article appears in the Journal of Risk and Financial Management. This study examines how the pandemic altered market volatility dynamics between India and key global economies, revealing significant volatility transmission patterns and interconnectedness changes.
The research utilizes data from 2016 to 2024 to trace volatility persistence in the Indian market and its ripple effects on countries such as Brazil, China, and Mexico. Findings show that while India’s influence remained strong throughout the period, the US market’s impact on India diminished after the pandemic. Notably, Russia’s role, though modest, emerged as statistically significant post-pandemic. These observations shed light on the long-term effects of the pandemic on global financial markets and provide valuable guidance for policymakers and investors navigating these turbulent times.
